TransRe creates Chief AI Officer role

Restructuring their data science team
< Back to hub

Transatlantic Holdings (Trans Re), a wholly owned subsidiary of Alleghany Corporation, has restructured its data science team with two senior appointments as it looks to better support the expansion and adoption of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and large language models.

To lead TransRe’s Artificial Intelligence Team (TRAIT), Otakar Hubschmann has been promoted to the newly created position of Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, with Socrates Pichardo, the current Chief Technology Officer (CTO) joining the team.

TRAIT will report to Matt Mahoney, Chief Operating Officer of TransRe, to help embed the capabilities within the operating units.

Hubschmann joined TransRe in 2016 from a quantitative trading background, to establish a data science group.

During his tenure, the data science team has worked on several projects to automate data extraction and ingestion from submissions and contracts, and to enable the rapid comparison of documentation.

Pichardo joined the reinsurer in 1993 and has led many major IT projects, including TransRe’s property underwriting platform and business cloud migration. He was appointed group CTO in 2017.

The establishment of TRAIT aims to integrate the rapidly developing capabilities of AI with TransRe’s existing expertise, and deliver additional insights for colleagues and clients.
