Ryan Specialty unites renewable MGUs under new global unit
< Back to hub

Ryan Specialty Underwriting Managers, the specialty underwriting arm of Ryan Specialty, has announced the launch of Ryan Specialty Renewables, a new international business unit that brings together several renewable energy managing general underwriters (MGUs).

This includes PERse Americas, PERse International, newly established Ryan Specialty ventures, and Albus, which joined the company following the acquisition of Castel Underwriting Agencies in May 2024.

The full integration of these teams into Ryan Specialty Renewables will take place throughout the second half of 2025, as operational processes are aligned.

The unit provides insurance solutions for a wide range of energy transition assets such as Offshore and Onshore Wind, Solar, and Battery Energy Storage Systems, among others.

Their offerings cover everything from operational facilities and construction phases to transit and natural catastrophe coverage. There are also plans to broaden the product range further to support the evolving needs of the global energy transition.

In terms of leadership, Mark Engel will continue his role as CEO of Marine & Energy for RSUM. Jeff Smith has been appointed President of North America for Ryan Renewables, where he will also continue to lead PERse Americas.

With over 20 years of experience in renewable energy insurance, Jeff was a founding member of PERse Americas and recently served as its President.

Stuart Burchell has taken on the role of President, International, Ryan Specialty Renewables. Burchell has been involved in renewable energy insurance since 2002 and has led PERse International since its creation in 2022.

Engel added: “Ryan Specialty’s existing renewable energy brands are trusted and experienced players in this sector of the insurance market. Combining the brands under one umbrella strengthens our renewable energy offering.

“As Ryan Specialty Renewables, it facilitates global collaboration by sharing expertise, knowledge, best practices, in-house engineering capabilities, data insights, and providing innovative insurance solutions specifically tailored to renewable energy projects worldwide.”

James Montgomery, CEO of RSUM International, remarked on the new platform: “The unification of PERse International and Albus under the Ryan Specialty Renewables banner marks a significant milestone for our international operations.

“Both MGAs have built strong reputations in the London market, and by bringing them together, we are creating a more agile, collaborative, and globally connected platform. This integration not only enhances our underwriting capabilities and technical depth but also reinforces our commitment to supporting the global energy transition.”
